Derby County 1 - 0 Cambridge United

DERBY COUNTY v CAMBRIDGE UNITED League 1 #23

Pride Park Friday 30th December 1945

Stupid time/day for a kick-off especially as you already have tickets for a gig bought months ago. Not happy.

I think that some were a little frustrated with the draw against Bolton but hey, it could have gone either way and lets face it Bolton are in that league position for a reason.

Cambridge United sit in the lower reaches of League 1 and one would hope that they are there for the taking but we all know .......

Not much on team news - there is whisper tat Curtis is able to start but may struggle to get his place back with the excellent Cashin and the resurgent Fozzie......Not sure if Didzy is available. Scrub that. No, he's doubtful and won't appear.

I am STILL waiting for the stars to align for Collins. Just feel he is very close to one of those performances where some team will be ripped to shreds.....or maybe not....

Beating Cambridge would take us nicely into the play-offs ......... again if only temporarily for a few hours

Team news:- Wildsmith (GK), Forsyth, Hourihane (68' Knight), Cashin, Bird (C), Collins, McGoldrick (90' Davies), Mendez-Laing, Smith, Sibley, Dobbin (73' Barkhuizen)

Subs: (not used) Loach (GK), Roberts, Thompson, Osula

RIP Pele

I’d like to congratulate NM-L on breaking the Derbyshire Allcomers record for the 60m dash in reaching that through ball. 👏🏻

Interesting game stat here. I've ersonally questioned the effectiveness of our midfield - but from twitter :
"Who is Derby County's most creative player?
According to the stats, Conor Hourihane creates 2.20 chances per 90 minutes, making him Derby's biggest creator 🌟"

This link shows who is effective...and who isn't :

I didn’t think the first half was as poor as some on here. We were far from our best but dominated and could easily have been a couple up at the break. Cambridge were a lot better than I expected - no cutting edge but I thought they pushed as quite hard.

We had enough chances to win comfortably but when they don’t go in you just have to make sure you get the three points. Knight added a lot of spark when he came on and I hope he keeps his place. I wonder if Hourihane’s stats might reflect the fact that he takes every free kick and corner.

I had Cashin MOM again for another flawless performance. There was a funny moment in the second half when he apologised to the linesman for giving him a massive bollocking when he thought hthe latter had given a throw-in the wrong way. Dobbin had a typical mix of great promise and lack of end product but the goal should do him a lot of good.

Elusive things, goals, arent they ?
Even in the build-up to ours there were a couple of moments when it could have gone horribly wrong.
Fozzy's ball out of defence was hurried and more than a bit fortunate to find a maroon shirt. Smith's pass to NML was too heavy and only brilliant work by the neckless one made it an easier task than it might have been for Dobbz.
Just shows even the best moves need a fair portion of luck to accompany the skill

Good point Vidal about Hourihane taking all the dead ball kicks... it would therefore give a false impression of his overall effectiveness wouldn't it.
On the subject of goals I seem to remember when we got promoted in 68/69 under Brian Clough we had many 1-0, 2 -1 wins... so maybe we need to get more adept at nicking 3 points.

…..BTW, Spart was the previous incumbent, (also on grass), following a chance meeting with heifers.

I'd take £10 million but not a penny less. Tell them to do one.

VC, PW has said someone has put in an offer for an unnamed player who in turn has said he does not want to leave and in any event PW does not want to sell. Probably Cashin. I would not sell him at all, never mind for 10 million. There's no point raising transfer fees which cannot be spent and there is apparently no need to sell anyone.

Ang, M-L had no right to catch that ball from Smith, never mind put in a perfect cross for Dobbin!
